per person
The first festival took place in 1994 and was orientated mainly towards Afrikaans rock music and attracted over 1000 music lovers. Oppikoppi is a colloquial abbreviation of the Afrikaans phrase “op die koppie”, which literally means “on the hill”. The camping area is at the foot of a hill, on top of which is a bar and the Sipho Gumede stage. This stage features all the hip hop and dance acts, while the main Oppikoppi stage features all of the big acts and most of the rock. Ranking ahead of OppiKoppi in the top three spots are the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium, Benicassim in Spain and Fuji Rocks which is held in the valley of Mount Fuji in Japan. “We are really happy about being included in the rankings. It’s really an honour to be the only African festival to feature on the list,” said Annelie Hoffman of OppiKoppi Productions. The OppiKoppi headline festival which takes place every April on the official OppiKoppi farm in Northam, Limpopo Province will be turning fifteen this year. The Oppikoppi Festival has grown to be South Africa’s largest music festival attracting thousands of visitors each year. It eflects the diverse musical offerings available in South Africa.
